Matt Yount is a full-time instructor of music at Southeast who first joined the faculty in 2003.  He serves as the department’s collaborative pianist, coaching chamber music, coordinating recitals, and appearing in recital performances with students and faculty.  Yount also performs with guest artists who come to Southeast for appearances in concerts, recitals, or master classes.  In addition to his primary role as collaborative pianist, Mr. Yount also teaches Music Appreciation and Jazz Appreciation courses for the music department, and since 1996 has taught private piano lessons through the Southeast Music Academy.

In August 2009, he gave his first solo piano recital as a member of the Southeast faculty, performing works by Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Prokofiev and Moszkowski.  In March 2008, he appeared as a concerto soloist with the Southeast Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the Poulenc Double Piano Concerto and Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals.

Mr. Yount was recognized for his excellent classroom teaching with the Success in Scholarship, Sports and Service Award in November 2006 and, more recently, he was awarded the College of Liberal Arts Faculty Honors Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Creative Activity for 2011.

A Southeast alumnus, Yount holds three degrees including diplomas in both music and mathematics.  As an undergraduate, he studied piano with Jim Sifferman and with professor emeritus John Shelton, winning honors in local and statewide collegiate piano competitions.  Yount studied piano for two years independently as a student of Jean-Louis Haguenauer and Reiko Neriki at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and has appeared in recital there in March 2009.  He can also be heard performing with Southeast’s Faculty Jazz Quintet locally in the Cape Girardeau area.
